History & Marks:–
A slice of information about the background of Silberporzellanmanufaktur Plüderhausen Manfred Veyhl (1930 - 1989)
Historically, we can look back to 1928 when Alfred Veyhl began to experiment with silver overlay and decorate simple everyday household glass and crockery items, such as cups & vases. The literature states that the early work was conducted in a garage or shed with the outcome selling soon to neighbours and friends. Word got out, and what was the small hobby for Alfred became a worthwhile business. Evidence shows that Alfred & Manfred attended Horticultural shows and events and took orders from exhibitors to have their flowers copied onto a vase surrounded by silver overlay.
Sadly, Alfred Veyhl died early in his life, leaving Manfred (Son), a silversmith founding his own workshop which specialised in overlay.

In an article by Michael Bohring, he highlights ….The company Alfred Veyhl had its own style from the beginning. It was mainly the combination of painted details of birds, flowers and similar motifs in polychrome enamels, framed by silver. The more abstract designs are rare. Alfred and later his son Manfred Veyhl were the only ones who used a varnish to avoid silver oxidation. Alfred used softer and rounder lines in his designs, while Manfred had a more angular, more expressive style. A specialty of this company was that customers could choose from a certain selection of porcelain shapes and decors. The articles were then produced exclusively in a single production run.
Having purchased, collected & sold items by Alfred & Manfred Veyhl over the years. I must admit that on the whole, I prefer the works of Manfred rather than that of his father Alfred. I much prefer the abstract works produced by Manfred.
Michael Bohring also highlighted, that at the time Alfred and later his son Manfred Veyhl, were the only ones who used a varnish on an item to avoid silver oxidation. I must add, that whilst the varnished surface of the vase may have looked fabulous at the time of production and prevented the need for cleaning for years to come. It did however, become a hindrance some years later and made people think the vase was damaged due to the varnish flaking.
Moreover, in the post war Europe many pieces of porcelain were damaged and thrown out because tastes changed and the pretty flower & bird vases produced by Veyhl were no longer desired.
Luckily later generations began to look out for Pre & Modernist Post War porcelains and began to see the craftsmanship in the work of Alfred & Manfred Veyhl.
